Plot Summary Capernaum (Arabic: كفرناحوم), meaning Chaos, is a Lebanese drama that tells the harrowing and deeply emotional story of Zain El Hajj, a 12-year-old boy living in the slums of Beirut. Born into a life of poverty, neglect, and abuse, Zain struggles to survive in a world that seems indifferent to his existence. The film begins with Zain being sentenced to five years in prison for stabbing someone and escalates as he sues his parents for bringing him into such a cruel and unkind world.
The story unfolds in flashbacks, revealing Zain's troubled life. He lives in a dilapidated apartment with his neglectful parents and several siblings. Forced to grow up quickly, Zain takes on adult responsibilities, such as working odd jobs to provide for his family. Zain eventually runs away and meets Rahil, an undocumented Ethiopian migrant worker. Rahil is struggling to care for her infant son, Yonas, while avoiding deportation. Zain forms a bond with Rahil and helps her look after Yonas. When Rahil is arrested, Zain is left to fend for himself and care for the baby, navigating the harsh realities of street life. The bond between Zain and Yonas becomes a central element of the story, symbolizing hope and humanity amid despair.The film climaxes with Zain’s confrontation with his parents and his heartfelt plea for justice, not only for himself but for all children born into suffering.
